From reporting via CNBC, Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg is ready to do what’s necessary to keep disinfo off the platform. In an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports, Sandberg said, “When the president violates our hate speech standards or gives false information about voter suppression or coronavirus, it comes down.”

Twitter made headlines earlier this year when they slapped a warning label on one of Trump’s claims about the fraudulence of voting by mail. While Facebook was iffy on the idea of wading into the same waters, they’ve since grown more receptive.

Sandberg notes that monitoring Trump’s disinfo, and the certain controversy that will come with it, will not be an easy task. According to CNBC’s reporting, “Facebook’s own employees criticized the company earlier this summer when Facebook decided not to remove or moderate a post in late May by Trump in which he said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” in reference to Black Lives Matter protests.”

This isn’t the first time Facebook has reversed their formerly hands-off approach. Earlier in August, the platform removed a video posted by Trump that proclaimed Covid immunity in children. The claim was patently false, which is likely why it’s removal wasn’t a difficult decision to make. However, Trump’s skillful manipulation of public opinion isn’t always so cut and dry, and Sandberg and her team will face much more difficult decisions ahead.
