New research released on Monday shows that Facebook users are engaging with false and misleading content three times as much today as they were in the lead up to the 2016 election. Over the four years that followed Donald Trump’s 2016 victory, we assumed work was diligently being done in the background to ensure that what we saw in 2016 would never again be repeated.
We were wrong. Facebook, still the most popular social media platform by a significant margin, has comprehensively failed to protect the community from the insidious spread of disinformation.
Now, more than ever, we need your help to push back against the wave of disinfo that is threatening our democracy. When we began our work, we chose disinfo as our niche, and it even became our namesake. As much now as we did then, we believe that effectively defeating Trump’s manipulation machine is synonymous with defeating Trump the candidate.
If you haven’t involved yourself in this election, now is the time to deploy your resources, and there is no better use of those resources than to disarm Trump’s greatest weapon.
Fighting against Trump’s disinformation campaigns costs money. We know times are tough right now, but, if you can, chip in $10 to make sure Trump is a one-term president and competent leaders can start repairing the mess that he’s made.
